Analysis Criteria for Urban, Suburban, and Rural Areas:

Urban Areas are defined as Census Block Groups with a density greater than or equal to 2,000 people per square mile, or places that have a total population greater than or equal to 100,000 and a density greater than or equal to 2,000 people per square mile. Urban areas are also places that have a total population greater than or equal to 200,000 people.

Suburban Areas are defined as Census Block Groups no more than 30 miles from urban areas or Census Block Groups with a density greater than or equal to 500 people per square mile and less than 2,000 people per square mile.

Rural Areas are defined as Census Block Groups with a density less than 500 people per square mile.

Places are defined as populated place areas that include census-designated places, consolidated cities, and incorporated places within the United States identified by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Jurisdictions reporting more than 2,500 street gang members occur in California from Fresno to San Diego with numerous reports in the Los Angeles area. Other areas reporting more than 2,500 street gang members are the Las Vegas, Nevada area; the Mesa, Arizona area: the Albuquerque New Mexico area; the Tulsa, Oklahoma area; and the El Paso area, Dallas/Fort Worth area, the San Antonia area and the Corpus Christi area in Texas.

These areas also have jurisdictions reporting 751 to 2,500 street gang members. Other jurisdictions reporting 751 to 2,500 street gang members occur in the areas around Laredo and Edinburg, Texas and Wichita, Kansas.

Jurisdictions reporting 1 to 250 and 251 to 750 street gang members occur throughout the southwest region.
