Raymond M. Kethledge

Nominee to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit

  • Mr. Kethledge is a highly intelligent and well-respected attorney who has litigated in state and federal trial and appellate courts across the country.

  • Mr. Kethledge has been nominated to the Sixth Circuit, which hears appeals from the federal district courts of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The Senate should give Mr. Kethledge a fair up-or-down vote and promptly confirm him to the federal bench.

    • He has yet to receive a hearing or vote of any sort even though he was originally nominated on June 28, 2006. He is the longest currently pending judicial nominee not to receive a hearing or a vote.

    • Mr. Kethledge has been nominated to fill a seat that is considered a "judicial emergency" by the Judicial Conference and that has been vacant for more than eight years.

    • The Detroit News, in an August 27, 2007 editorial, pointed to Mr. Kethledge's experience "as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy" and urged that "Kethledge . . . should get a hearing and a vote."

    • Mr. Kethledge enjoys strong bipartisan support from colleagues and opposing counsel alike.

    • Mr. Kethledge received a "Well Qualified" rating by the ABA.

  • Mr. Kethledge has a distinguished record as a practicing attorney, at both the trial and appellate levels, and as a public servant.

    • From 1998 to the present, with the exception of one year spent as a counsel at the Ford Motor Company, Mr. Kethledge has appeared frequently in court, briefing and arguing appeals and motions in class actions and other complex litigation.

    • Mr. Kethledge is known for his outstanding intellect, excellent writing skills, pleasant demeanor, strong work ethic, and integrity. Clients, co-counsel, colleagues, judges, and opposing counsel all praised Mr. Kethledge's nomination to the federal appellate bench.

    • Mr. Kethledge has long been dedicated to pro bono service and charitable causes. He and his firm are very active in the community, sponsoring fundraisers and scholarship programs. Mr. Kethledge has also given personally of his legal skills, earning the Community Legal Service's Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award for his work with the disadvantaged in Michigan.

  • Mr. Kethledge has exceptional academic credentials and professional training.

    • He served as a law clerk for Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge Ralph B. Guy, Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

    • He worked as Judiciary Counsel to former U.S. Senator Spencer Abraham.

    • He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a member of the Order of the Coif, in 1993. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in history in 1989.

  • Mr. Kethledge has used his legal skills to assist numerous individuals on a pro bono basis.

    • Mr. Kethledge worked with Community Legal Services, a provider of legal services to the disadvantaged in Michigan, helping numerous homeowners keep their homes.

    • He has also worked with the New Leaders New Schools charitable organization, which assists in placing school principals in economically depressed areas.
