JOEL KLEIN TO BECOME ACTING ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL
FOR ANTITRUST

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Attorney General Janet Reno today announced
that Joel I. Klein will become the Acting Assistant Attorney General for 
the Antitrust Division upon the departure of Anne K. Bingaman.  Klein, 49, 
is currently the principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Division, 
and has served in that capacity since April 1, 1995.  

On August 1, Bingaman announced that she would resign her position 
as head of the Antitrust Division to return to the private sector.  She 
expects to leave no later than November 15 of this year.

"Joel has been an outstanding Deputy.  His efforts in international 
antitrust enforcement and his command of complex antitrust issues are exemplary.  
I know that under his leadership, the Division will continue to vigorously 
enforce the antitrust laws," said Bingaman. 

Klein came to the Division from the White House Counsel's office 
where he served from 1993 to April 1995 as Deputy Counsel to the President.

Before his work at the White House, Klein was in private practice 
with the Washington law firm Klein, Farr, Smith & Taranto.  He has 
practiced law in Washington for more than 20 years and is considered to 
be one of the nation's leading appellate advocates having argued many cases 
before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Klein graduated magna cum laude from Columbia College and Harvard 
Law School in 1967 and 1971 respectively.

Klein and his wife Patsy Davis, live in Washington, D.C., with 
their daughter Julia, and a step-daughter, Harriet.
