NEW SPECIAL COUNSEL FOR HEALTH CARE FRAUD

NAMED AT JUSTICE DEPARTMENT

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Associate Deputy Attorney General Deborah E. Landis has been named as Special Counsel for Health Care Fraud for the Department of Justice. Her responsibilities will include overseeing and coordinating the Department's entire health care fraud program, including policy, regulatory and enforcement issues. She also will provide advice on health care fraud enforcement issues directly to the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General.

Before joining the Deputy Attorney General's office in May, Ms. Landis served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York for 12 years. In that capacity, she handled investigations and prosecutions involving fraud on the government, as well as money-laundering, public corruption and other white collar criminal matters. She also prosecuted violent narcotics traffickers.

Before joining the United States Attorney's Office, Ms. Landis was an associate at Lankler Siffert & Wohl, a New York law firm that specializes in white-collar criminal defense. She also served for two years as law clerk to the Honorable William C. Conner, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York.

Ms. Landis grew up in New York, and received her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
