STATEMENT BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

"We are disappointed that the court -- by a 5 to 4 margin -- concluded that Congress had not given the FDA authority to regulate tobacco products.

"I am however encouraged that the Court recognized the harmful effects tobacco products have on children.

"I hope that after today's decision Congress will pass legislation that would protect children by restricting advertising and limiting access to tobacco products and giving the FDA clear authority to regulate tobacco products."
