ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT WELCOMES WHITE HOUSE NOMINEE

FOR ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE OFFICE OF LEGAL COUNSEL

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General John Ashcroft today welcomed President George W. Bush's announcement of his intention to nominate John F. Manning to be Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel.

"John Manning will lead the Office of Legal Counsel with honor," Ashcroft said. "His past experience at the Department will be of assistance to all of us. He will be a key partner in carrying out our goals for the future, and I look forward to working with him."

Since 1994, Manning has served as a Professor at Columbia Law School, where he specializes in administrative law, legislation, and federal courts. During the Winter of 2000, he held the post of visiting Professor at the University of Chicago. Prior to his academic work, he served at the Department of Justice as Assistant to the Solicitor General.

From 1989-1991, Manning worked as an associate at the law firm Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher in Washington DC, where he specialized in appellate litigation cases. Previously, he acted as Attorney-Advisor for the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice.

He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard, and received his JD from Harvard Law School in 1985, with magna cum laude honors. Manning also served as the Supreme Court Office chair for the Harvard Law Review. Following law school, he clerked for Judge Robert H. Bork, U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit, and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
