STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN ASHCROFT

"Today, terrorists struck in Gaza, killing three Americans and injuring a fourth American and a Palestinian. The victims were innocent people traveling as part of a peaceful convoy to offer educational opportunities to Palestinians. I extend my deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and their loved ones.

"The Department of Justice has activated an FBI Fly-Away Team consisting of investigators and forensic experts to travel to the site of the terror attack. The Justice Department will assist the Israeli authorities and provide any and all assistance that is appropriate during the investigation. This attack confirms yet again the reality of the worldwide terrorist threat, and demonstrates the importance of President Bush's leadership in combating terrorism both at home and abroad."
