FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CIV FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 1995 (202) 514-2008 TDD (202) 514-1888 JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ATTORNEYS TO BRIEF MEDIA ON CAREMARK SETTLEMENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Justice Department attorneys will provide a briefing on the $161 million health care fraud settlement with Caremark International at 1:00 today in Conference Room B of the Main Justice Department Building. Gerald Stern, named by Attorney General Reno as the Department's Special Counsel for Health Care Fraud, and attorneys from the Civil Division and Criminal Division who worked on the settlement will be present. After an extensive multi-agency investigation of health care fraud, Caremark has pled guilty and agreed to pay approximately $161 million in criminal fines, civil restitution and damages for kickbacks and fraud in its home infusion, oncology, hemophilia and human growth hormone businesses. The amount is one of the largest ever obtained in a health care fraud case. The Caremark case has utilized the resources of more than ten federal agencies working cooperatively, along with state law enforcement officials and U.S. Attorneys in a dozen cities around the country: Minneapolis, Minnesota; Columbus, Ohio; Hartford, Connecticut; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Denver, Colorado; Washington,D.C.; Atlanta, Georgia; Buffalo, New York; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Houston, Texas.
