Ohioan Named to Senior Justice Department Position

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Native Clevelander, Kent Markus, 36, has
been named Acting Assistant Attorney General for Legislative
Affairs at the U.S. Justice Department, effective immediately.

Markus replaces Sheila Anthony who announced her resignation
last week. He is expected to serve until a permanent replacement
for Anthony is nominated and confirmed by the Senate.

In just over a year at the Justice Department, Markus has
worked on the staffs of the Deputy and Associate Attorneys General,
handling major management and policy projects. He coordinated the
Justice Department's efforts to implement the Brady Law and last
year's Crime Bill. He established the Department's new Community
Oriented Policing Services (COPS) office, which is responsible for
meeting President Clinton's pledge to put 100,000 new police
officers on the street.

In naming Markus to the post, Attorney General Janet Reno
said, "Sheila Anthony will certainly be missed. Still, we're
fortunate to have someone of Kent's energy, humor and proven
managerial capabilities to step in to run this critical division of
the Justice Department. His understanding of the law, the
Congress, and goals of this Department and Administration make him
ideally suited for the position."

Markus will serve as one of eleven Assistant Attorneys General
at the Department of Justice who manage the day to day operations
of the various Justice Department components. His responsiblities
will include advising the Attorney General on her legislative
agenda as well as reviewing legislation that impacts the policies
of the Department.

Prior to his work at the Justice Department, Markus was the
Chief of Staff at the Democratic National Committee. He also
served as Chief of Staff for former Ohio Attorney General Lee
Fisher from 1990 to 1992. He is a graduate of Northwestern
University and an Honors graduate of Harvard Law School. His wife,
Susan Gilles, is a visiting professor of law at Washington & Lee
University, on leave from Capital Law School in Columbus.
