How to Make a FOIA Request
FOIA requests must be made in writing and may be sent to the above address or submitted electronically via email at ATJ.FOIA@usdoj.gov or FOIA.gov. Requests should include a return address that identifies your street name/number, and an email if applicable, so that we may respond to your request. For further guidance, see 28 C.F.R. § 16.3 (“Requirements for Making Requests”).
Under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. § 552, and the Department’s FOIA Guide, any person may request access to Office for Access to Justice (ATJ) records.
A FOIA request must sufficiently provide a detailed description of the specific records sought to enable ATJ staff to conduct a search for the requested records with a reasonable amount of effort.
Please note that all ATJ records sought under the FOIA are centralized within the component. ATJ does not create or maintain records that do not fall within the office’s core mission nor does the component have regional or field offices for creation and maintenance of records.
