Charting the Future Course of International Technical Assistance at the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission

The Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission hosted a one-day workshop on international technical assistance on Wednesday, February 6, 2008.

Overview of the Workshop

For nearly two decades, the Antitrust Division and the Federal Trade Commission have actively promoted market competition around the world by providing technical assistance, primarily with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, to new antitrust agencies and to countries in the process of reforming their markets and adopting antitrust laws. Since 1991, the agencies have conducted approximately 400 missions to scores of countries on short-term trips and multi-month advisory missions.

During this workshop, Antitrust Division and Federal Trade Commission officials described how their programs have worked and discussed ideas for maximizing their future effectiveness. Through interactive panels, the agencies also obtained the perspectives of other aid providers in the field, academics, and private practitioners, with a view toward making improvements and charting a course for the future.
