NHTSA/Odometer Fraud (CLOSED) Most Recent Update 1/30/08 (See end of document) United States v. Norman Lee Griffin, 4: 07-CR-0021 (S.D. Tex.) 4/10/07 Update: On March 8, 2007, Norman Lee Griffin pled guilty to an information charging him with resetting and altering an odometer in violation of 49 U.S.C. §§ 32703(2) and 32709(b). The Information charges that Griffin purchased and sold motor vehicles in College Station, Texas, and elsewhere, using the name Mr. G's Auto Toy Store. As part of his plea, Griffin admitted that he had been responsible for odometer fraud that had harmed at least fifty people. Sentencing is set for June 1, 2007. 6/18/07 Update: On defendant's motion, Judge Sim Lake changed the sentencing date to September 13, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. 10/24/07 Update: On October 12, 2007, Norman “Lee” Griffin, 47, of College Station, Texas, was sentenced for his role in an odometer tampering scheme that involved numerous victims. In March 2007, Griffin waived indictment and pled guilty to a one count criminal information that involved odometer tampering. Griffin admitted to purchasing and selling vehicles in 1995 under the dealership, Mr. G’s Toy Store in College Station, Texas. In Griffin’s plea agreement he admitted to an odometer tampering scheme that involved over fifty victims. At sentencing, the government argued for a loss amount based on 66 victims and a loss of approximately $3,000 per victim and that Griffin had violated conditions of probation for a previous offense. Judge Sim T. Lake sentenced Griffin to 36 months in prison and required Griffin to avoid acting as a motor vehicle dealer for one year following his incarceration. A victim restitution order is pending and is anticipated to be issued within 90 days of sentencing. 12/14/07 Update: No change in status. 1/30/08 Update: |
