Attend an Orientation Session
The first step in the application process is to contact your local DEA Recruitment Office. We encourage applicants to attend a Special Agent Applicant Orientation session at one of our Field Division Office locations. To locate the appropriate Field Division Office and schedule an orientation session, visit the Recruitment Offices page and contact the appropriate Special Agent Recruitment Coordinator for that office.

Seating may be limited so you may be required to reserve a slot for the next orientation session. Casual Business attire is required. A valid Driver's License or Military ID may be required for entry. If you live a significant distance from the local recruitment office, we may opt to conduct a phone screening and orientation rather than doing so in person.

In order to become a DEA Special Agent, you must successfully complete all phases of the rigorous, in-depth hiring process. This process may take up to
12 months or longer, and includes the following phases:

  • Qualifications Review
  • Written Assessment and Panel Interview
  • Urinalysis Drug Test
  • Medical Examination
  • Physical Task Test "PTT training booklet" (1.9 MB PDF*)
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Psychological Assessment
  • Full-field Background Investigation
  • Final Hiring Decision

All applicants must successfully complete all phases of the hiring process, and remain among the Most Competitive candidates, to receive a final offer of employment.
