Effingham Father and Son Plead Guilty to Pill Distribution

JAN 15 -- Columbia, South Carolina ---- Acting United States Attorney Kevin F. McDonald and Rodney G. Benson, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the DEA Atlanta Field Division (AFD), announced that Louis Walter Miles, Age 61, and his son Louis Andrew Miles, age 39, both of Effingham, South Carolina, pled guilty in federal court in Florence to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, a violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 846.    United States District Judge R. Bryan Harwell accepted the pleas and will sentence the men at a later date.

Evidence presented in court established that Louis Walter Miles and his son Louis Andrew Miles illegally distributed thousands of Oxycodone pills from 2001 to September 2009.  The men admitted purchasing the painkillers from individuals who had prescriptions for the drugs.  The investigation continues as to others involved in the conspiracy.

Mr. McDonald stated the maximum penalty the men can receive is a fine of $1,000,000.00 and imprisonment of 20 years.

The case was investigated by agents of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Diversion Unit.  Assistant United States Attorney William E. Day, II, of the Florence office handled the case.
