Wareham Dentist Charged with Illegally Distributing Drugs

DEC 14 -- BOSTON, Mass. - A Wareham dentist was charged in federal court today with illegally distributing and dispensing controlled substances.

Steven W. Derr, Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, New England Field Division and United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz announced today. STEVEN MILLER, 68, was charged in a criminal complaint with illegally distributing and dispensing Vicodin and Valium. The defendant was arrested today, and a search warrant was executed at his dental office in Wareham.

The complaint alleges that in November and December of 2010, Miller distributed
Vicodin and Valium in Wareham to individuals, including a DEA Task Force Officer acting in an undercover capacity, whom he was not treating. As referenced in the affidavit, it is also alleged that Miller prescribed controlled substances without a valid medical purpose, namely in exchange for sexual favors.

If convicted, the defendant faces a up to 10 years in prison, followed by a term of supervised release, and a $1M fine. Miller voluntarily surrendered his dental license today.

The case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New England Field Division Tactical Diversion Squad which is comprised of investigators from DEA and the Burlington, North Andover, Plainville, Wellesley, Westbourgh, Worcester and Douglas Police Departments. DEA was assisted by the Wareham Police Department and received cooperation from the Massachusetts Board of Dentistry.
