Camarena Elementary Dedication
Mr. Jose A. “Fito” Salinas, LJISD School Board Secretary
Today we dedicate a new school to the La Joya Independent School District. This structure is the result of our community’s continued support of our district and our effort to provide greater educational opportunities to all students. It is very satisfying to see our communities grow and it is our responsibility as leaders in public education, to ensure that we are producing quality graduates that will continue to lead our communities to success.
Additionally, it is a source of great pride that this school building bears the name of a distinguished public servant who gave his life to protect the lives of others. Enrique “Kiki” Camarena held an outstanding record of public service beginning in the United States Marine Corps., then as a fireman, police investigator, narcotics investigator, and concluding with his exemplary commitment to public safety as a Special Agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
His life and his commitment to standing for his ideals in spite of the dangers and threats to his life make him a model to follow for both our students and staff. It is our hope that every member of the La Joya ISD community is prepared to lead positive lifestyles, free of drug use and other criminal activity. The district’s Character Education program ensures that as public educators, we educate the whole child. We want each student to pass tests in the classroom and outside in the real world. It is our hope that they will be able to distinguish right from wrong, and follow in the footsteps of such great men as Mr. Camarena.
They need not be Special Agents for the Drug Enforcement Administration; but they must have the strength of character that Enrique Camarena demonstrated by being fully committed to the task at hand and by recognizing the profound significance that his actions could have on the lives of so many others.
I thank everyone who was able to join us this morning to honor the memory of Mr. Enrique “Kiki” Camarena and to honor the role that public education plays in the advancement of our communities. Through your support, the children of the La Joya ISD will also have the opportunity to make this world a better place.
