DEA Statement on Viktor Bout Conviction
NOV 02 - “With today’s verdict in the Southern District of New York, one of the world’s most notorious merchants in illicit arms has finally been held to account for his heinous criminal profiteering in death and destruction,” said DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart. “Victor Bout profited by arming lawless men with weapons of war, and cared nothing for the potential harm to innocent Americans. Today’s verdict is the result of the tireless efforts of DEA Special Agents and analysts, our foreign law enforcement partners, and federal prosecutors who relentlessly sought justice against evil men like Bout.”
Viktor Bout was convicted today in Manhattan Federal Court on all four counts in an indictment that was unsealed on May 6, 2008. The counts are:
1. Conspiracy to kill United States Nationals;
2. Conspiracy to kill United States officers and employees;
3. Conspiracy to acquire and use an anti-aircraft missile; and
4. Conspiracy to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
