Salt Lake City Man Sentenced for Distributing Methamphetamine

JUN 17 -- (Idaho) - On June 7, 2010, Pedro Cruz-Avila, 44, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute approximately one kilogram of methamphetamine, and 16 months in prison for illegal re-entry. The two sentences will be served concurrently. Cruz-Avila will be deported to Mexico after his release from prison.

The investigation began in September 2009 after Cruz-Avila was identified by law enforcement as a person who was traveling from Salt Lake to Boise to distribute methamphetamine. Between September 5, 2009, and November 4, 2009, Cruz-Avila delivered quantities of methamphetamine ranging from one ounce to one pound of methamphetamine to law enforcement. On November 4, 2009, Cruz-Avila was arrested. An additional quantity of methamphetamine was also seized from his residence in Salt Lake.

The investigation revealed that Cruz-Avila had been twice deported from the United States in May 1998 and June 2000.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
