Mt. Vernon, Illinois Man Sentenced on Crack Cocaine and Heroin Charges

APR 23- (BENTON, IL) - A. Courtney Cox, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced that on April 22, 2010, Byron E. BURNETT, age 28, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, was sentenced in United States District Court in Benton, Illinois. BURNETT was sentenced to 204 months imprisonment, a $250 fine, and 4 years of supervised release.

BURNETT had previously pleaded guilty to five counts in a federal indictment; one count of conspiracy to distribute, and possess with the intent to distribute, crack cocaine; three counts of
distribution of crack cocaine; and one count of distribution of heroin. The time frame of the conspiracy was March 13-26, 2009.

The investigation was conducted by the Joint Narcotics Unit of the Mt. Vernon Police
Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the Centralia Police Department, the
Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Illinois State
Police, the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office, the United States Marshal Service, and other law enforcement agencies pursuant to their participation in the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney George Norwood.
