ASAC William J. Bryant, Little Rock District Office, was the guest speaker at the Southeast Middle School Weed and Seed Red Ribbon Activity held on October 28, 2009 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. ASAC Bryant addressed the history behind the Red Ribbon Campaign and the importance of staying drug free. The program also had participating students in signing a commitment to “Learn and Serve” in their community and being “Too Smart to Start Drug Pledges”. The program had other speakers from Southeast Middle School Student Council, Pine Bluff District Attorney’s Office, Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Club and the Distinguished Young Gentlemen of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The program ended with the drawing of numerous Red Ribbon Prizes for students.

On October 30, 2009, 3rd-5th grade students at Crystal Hill Elementary in Arkansas recognized the Red Ribbon Campaign by inviting SA Warzecha to speak at their school. The students showed their support for drug prevention by wearing red clothing. SA Warzecha spoke regarding the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of Red Ribbon Week.

On October 28, 2009, 450 Arkansas students at Robinson Middle School showed their support for Red Ribbon Week by wearing red wrist bands. In addition, the school held an assembly where SA Warzecha spoke about SA Enrique Camarena and the significance of the Red Ribbon Campaign.

On October 29, 2009, 450 9-12 th grade students from Benton High School in Arkansas celebrated Red Ribbon Week by inviting SA Keith Warzecha, Little Rock DO, to speak at their school. To show their commitment to Red Ribbon Week, students were encouraged to wear red. The presentation included the history and meaning of the Red Ribbon Campaign as well as the risks and consequences of drug use. |

On October 28, 2009, the New Orleans Field Division (NOFD) in conjunction with the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office held a news conference unveiling the mural dedicated to S/A Enrique Camarena and raising awareness of the Red Ribbon Week Campaign. SAC Jimmy S. Fox III and Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman both addressed the importance of educating the public regarding the risk of substance abuse and making sure that the legacy of S/A Camarena and others committed to reducing the threat of drugs in our society. The mural is located on the perimeter wall of the Orleans Parish Prison facing I-10, which will be viewed by thousands of commuters each day. |
SAC Fox presented Artist Erin Bowers a New Orleans Field Division souvenir as a token of appreciation for her thoughtful design and painting of the mural. Ms. Bowers incorporated the Fleur de Lis, a red ribbon and the colors of the American Flag into the mural. The Fleur de Lis represents the Louisiana State Symbol, the red ribbon highlights the Red Ribbon Week Campaign and the red, white and blue represents S/A Camarena’s service in the U.S. Marines and Drug Enforcement Administration. - Oct 23-31: Tribute to SA Camarena on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge. The Causeway will display Red Ribbon messages on the bridge's electronic signs that are erected along the 24 mile span.
-- The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Art Program, in conjunction with DEA-New Orleans, will display a mural along Interstate 10. The mural will be the symbol of the city, a fleur de lis, wrapped in a red ribbon.
-- National Guard Sgt. Melissa Flatau, who is assigned to the NOFD, will conduct her normal Demand Reduction Program entitled Too Good for Drugs in conjunction with handing out red ribbons, pencils, and wristbands during the week. Sgt. Flatau presents her program to schools in Jefferson Parish, LA.
- Oct 23: SA Todd Hixon and SA Wade Barnes will speak to students at Rockwell Elementary School in Spanish Fort, AL.
-- SA Mark Kiger will represent DEA at the Institute for Social Justice's National Crime Summit. SA Kiger will participate in a panel discussion on drug issues. The Summit will take place in New Orleans, LA.
- Oct 26: SA/Pilot John Scudder will speak at the Marigny Elementary School Red Ribbon event and have the DEA helicopter on display at the school.
-- A Scott Arseneaux will make a presentation during the Red Ribbon program at Covington Pathways School in Covington, LA.
- Oct 28: St. Mary's Catholic School in Mobile, AL will host RAC Tom Wade during its Red Ribbon Program. RAC Wade will offer remarks at the event.
-- ASAC William Bryant will represent DEA at a Red Ribbon event at Southeast School in Pine Bluff. AR.
- Oct 29: DEA will participate in a National Candlelight Vigil at the University of New Orleans, New Orleans, LA. GS Warren Rivera will speak.
- Oct 30: DEA will participate in Red Ribbon activities at Pitcher Junior High School in Covington, LA. The NOFD will have our Clandestine Lab Truck on display, as well as having Special Agents in attendance.
-- DEA will participate in Madison Central High School's Red Ribbon event in Madison, MS. SA Anita Pope and TFO Charlie Hill will represent the Jackson DO at the event.
- Dec 7: GS Warren Rivera will speak to students at St. Charles Borromeo Elementary School in Destrehan, LA.
