24-Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) Specialist Ron Dollar of the Arkansas
Army National Guard and DEA Special Agent Keith Warzecha hosted a Drug
Education For Youth (DEFY) camp at Camp Robinson, Arkansas during the
week of July 7th 2003. The week-long camp was organized with Cindy Bartlett,
coordinator of the Texarkana Weed and Seed program. Forty, "at-risk"
preteens attended the camp which consisted of physical fitness, drug education
and activities such as swimming and fishing. They also went on field trips
to the IMAX theatre and Pulaski County Juvenile Detention Center, amongst
other places. The curriculum included physical fitness, drug awareness,
drug resistance, social skills, role playing, and self-management skills.
National
Guard Officer Gary Thompson from Ft. Worth, Sgt. Jack Vega from Austin,
Sgt. Humberto Gonzalez from McAllen, and Ricardo Banda from Laredo Texas
provided educational assistance. Texarkana Weed and Seed Police Officer
Lonnie Booker and Sergeant Stephen Gass assisted with motivational lectures
and anti-drug role playing exercises.
