Highest Civilian Volunteer Award
JUN
6In April 2003, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford presented
retired DEA Special Agent in Charge Lawrence McElynn with the Order of
the Silver Crescent Award, South Carolina's highest civilian volunteer
award.
Lawrence
McElynn retired from the DEA after a distinguished 30-year career. McElynn,
staying true to DEA's mission, began to address the problems of drug use
and abuse through prevention efforts within South Carolina's school system.
In 2001, McElynn was recognized, by then Governor James Hodges, as a "Community
Hero." In 2002, McElynn's efforts and dedication were recognized
by South Carolina Department of Education when he was awarded the "Palmetto
Serves" award for his significant contributions to schools within
the state of South Carolina. In 2002, State Superintendent of Education,
Inez Tenenbaum said, "Lawrence McElynn is a great example of the
many South Carolinians who are improving the lives of our students."
Moreover Tenenbaum said, of McElynn, "these citizens give unselfishly
of their time and talent to our young people, and they are making a positive
impact on the future leaders of this state." Now in 2003, McElynn
has been recognized again, this time by South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford,
with the Order of the Silver Crescent Award. During 2003, McElynn presented
to over 1000 students attending several area High Schools, and 500 parents
and community members. The nomination stated that McElynn spoke to several
civic groups such as the Rotary, Kiwanis, PTA, Chamber of Commerce, and
church groups. In April, Governor Sanford said of McElynn, "by raising
awareness of the danger of the use and abuse of illegal drugs, you have
improved the lives of countless individuals."
McElynn
remains committed to improving the lives of thousands of kids in the South
Carolina area. His efforts and selfless dedication serve as an example
for countless others. Furthermore, his life and mission prove to us all
that
one man can make a difference.
