Illegal Alien Sentenced For Possession Of Meth For Distribution
- Also possessed an AR-15 rifle and 94 grams of meth

OCT 6 -- (Louisville, KY) - U.S. Attorney David L. Huber of the Western District of Kentucky announced today that Fernando Ortiz, age 28, of Louisville, Kentucky, was sentenced to 8 years and 1 month imprisonment in United States District Court in Louisville, Kentucky. He was sentenced for possession of more than 5 grams of methamphetamine for the purpose of distribution, and possession of a firearm by an illegal alien. U.S. District Judge Joseph H. McKinley, Jr., also sentenced Ortiz to 4 years supervised release following incarceration. There is no parole in the federal judicial system.

Ortiz pled guilty on March 3, 2008, to possessing more than 94 grams of a substance containing methamphetamine with the intent of distributing it. Ortiz also admitted that he possessed an AR-15 assault rifle, which was a criminal offense due to his status as an illegal alien. The street value of the methamphetamine is approximately $4,000.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John E. Kuhn, Jr., and it was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Louisville Metro Police Department.
