Release [print-friendly version] The New York Field Division Teamed Up to Paint the NOV 04 -- From Buffalo, New York to New York City red ribbons were worn to commemorate Red Ribbon Week 2008. Several monuments and buildings were lit in red to draw attention to Red Ribbon Week. The following locations were lit in red this year during red ribbon week: the Albany Federal Building, Niagara Falls, The Electric Tower (Buffalo, NY), the Niagara Mohawk Building (Syracuse, NY), and the KBK Federal Building (Rochester, NY). DEA employees made a point to reach out to schools and several events in order to relay the red ribbon message. Capital District Sports and DEA Albany promoted the Red Ribbon Campaign during an Albany River Rats professional hockey game. Employees from Albany, Long Island, Westchester, Buffalo, Plattsburgh, Manhattan, Rochester and Syracuse visited numerous high schools and middle schools to discuss the dangers of drug abuse. Some highlights included: The Syracuse Resident Office and the Syracuse City/County Drug Commission disseminated red ribbons and red rubber band bracelets at the 3rd Annual Underage Drinking Summit at Driver's Village Conference Center. In addition, last year the "Plant-the-Promise" was initiated. The “Plant-the-Promise” Initiative was a Drug-Free campaign in which 57 schools and agencies throughout the county planted Red Tulip bulbs in honor of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena. These bulbs bloomed in April, during National Alcohol Awareness Month. This year, the SRO provided approximately 1700 tulip bulbs to schools and agencies during Red Ribbon Week. The Rochester Resident Office (RO) in partnership with the DePaul National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence placed several demand reduction banners on a number of city buses that were advertised throughout the month of October. And lastly, DEA Resident Agent in Charge David Zon spoke at the HEART Coalition’s annual Red Ribbon Press Conference and Report to the Community at the High Falls. SAC Gilbride thanked all of the DEA employees who took time out of their own schedules to participate in Red Ribbon Week this year. |
