San Diego Cardiologist Arrested for Prescription Fraud

AUG 01 -- (San Diego)- Today David Michael Hill, M.D, 57, was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Medical Board of California (MBC) following a four month, joint investigation.

In April 2008 the MBC Central Complaint Unit received information that David Michael Hill, M.D., a board certified physician in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, was ordering prescriptions of hydrocodone, also known as Vicodin or Norco, from local Encinitas pharmacies in variations of his name and his wife’s name. Dr. Hill then went to various pharmacies and purchased the pain pills with cash.

Records obtained from February 2008 through July 2008 revealed that Dr. Hill was purchasing the hydrocodone and signing the pharmacy signature logs as the patient or the spouse of the patient.

During this same time Dr. Hill prescribed and purchased over 1,000 pain tablets per month and had purchased as much as 1,525 in one month. Dr. Hill used various combinations of nine different names and used eight different pharmacies to fill the prescriptions.

Today’s efforts also included the execution of search warrants at Dr. Hill’s Encinitas residence and his Encinitas office.

Dr. Hill was charged with violations of Health and Safety Code section 11173, obtaining a prescription by fraud. This investigation is being prosecuted by the San Diego District Attorney’s Office, Narcotics Division.
