JUN 23 -- LOUISVILLE, KY - Acting U.S. Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky announced today that Michael Dawon Hughes, of Louisville, Kentucky, was sentenced on June 22, 2009, to four years in prison, for conspiracy to possess and with the intent to distribute cocaine and crack cocaine. U. S District Judge Jennifer B. Coffman also sentenced Hughes to four years supervised release following the incarceration. There is no parole in the federal judicial system.

Hughes was sentenced following his guilty plea relating to his involvement in cocaine and crack cocaine distribution. The defendant previously admitted that on April 9, 2008, in the Western District of Kentucky, he sold his co-defendant Timothy Barnett an amount of crack cocaine in the parking lot of Southland Terrace Shopping Center. Following that transaction, both individuals were arrested and law enforcement officers searched Hughes and found him in possession of 187grams of crack cocaine, 1,207 grams of powder cocaine, and $15,700 in U.S. Currency.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mac Shannon. The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Timothy Barnett is scheduled to be sentenced before Judge Coffman on July 20, 2009 at 10:00, in Louisville, Kentucky.
