DEA Lafayette Arrests local Dentist

JAN 29 -- On January 29, 2008 at approximately 8:00 p.m., DEA Lafayette POD conducted a joint operation with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office and arrested Dr. James Bush. Dr. Bush is a prominent Dentist in Rayne, LA, with patients including the Sheriff of Acadia Parish. This investigation was initiated approximately one month ago when agents received information from a cooperating source that Dr. Bush was trading Adderall for prescriptions of Oxycodone, Xanax, Lortab, and other controlled substances. CS information also indicated that Dr. Bush was abusing cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana.

A background of Dr. Bush revealed that Dr. Bush had previously surrendered his DEA License in 2002 for over-prescribing and writing excessive prescriptions. Dr. Bush’s DEA registration was subsequently returned in 2006.

On the night of January 29, 2009, agents utilized the cooperating source to telephonically negotiate with Dr. Bush for the acquisition of several prescriptions in exchange for 60-90 tablets of Adderall. Subsequent to the negotiations, Dr. Bush invited the CS to his residence. The CS was equipped with a button camera to capture the undercover deal. Ultimately, the CS traded 60 tablets of Adderall for two (2) prescriptions of Oxycodone and (1) prescription of Xanax.

After the undercover deal, agents executed a search warrant at the residence of Dr. Bush and recovered small amounts of Adderall, , Lortab (w/o prescription) and Dextroproxyphene (w/o prescription) and several bags of marijuana. Agents also recovered blank prescription pads located throughout his residence. Post-Miranda, Dr. Bush confessed to agents that he had an addiction problem and surrendered his DEA registration.

Dr. Bush was charged in Louisiana 15th Judicial State Court in Crowley, LA with the following:

1) 40:971 C 1 (2 counts/Writing w/o medical reason)
