Release [print-friendly version] New Orleans Division Celebrates Women's History Month MAR 19 -- The New Orleans Field Division (NOFD) kicked off observance of National Women’s History Month 2009 with a pot luck luncheon held in SAC Jimmy Fox’s conference room. In keeping with this year’s theme, “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet”, a representative of Carol’s Daughter, an environmentally friendly company, was present and provided a demonstration of a line of natural hair and skin care products. On March 10, a group of nurses from Ochsner Healthcare conducted a Health Fair in the NOFD training room. They provided blood pressure and cholesterol screening for interested participants and recommendations for improving one’s overall health. On March 17, the NOFD welcomed two guest speakers who are dedicating their lives to preserving our environment. The first speaker was Ann Wilson, Superintendent of Environmental Services for the City of Alexandria, Louisiana. The second speaker was JoAnn Burke, Education Coordinator for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation. Another special guest, 8th grader Eric Le, was present and read his paper entitled, “How Can Tomorrow’s Leaders Take a Lead in Saving Our Planet Today?” Eric Le was the winner of an essay contest coordinated by the NOFD Women’s History Committee. The NOFD is continuing to celebrate Women’s History by conducting a donation drive for the Battered Women’s Shelter throughout the month of March. The committee has also scheduled a volunteer outing at the Lake Pontchartrain Lighthouse which is being restored after being severely damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav. Volunteers will contribute to the lighthouse restoration by painting the ADA ramp of the lighthouse educational center.
