Release [print-friendly version] Northshore Doctor Indicted for Obtaining Controlled AUG 20 -- NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA -DR. PAUL E. NATHAN, age 48, of Mandeville, Louisiana was charged by a Federal Grand Jury on July 29, 2009 in a ten count indictment with obtaining controlled substances by misrepresentation, deception and subterfuge, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten and Special Agent in Charge Jimmy S. Fox III. According to the indictment, NATHAN, who is a medical doctor, lost his privilege to write prescriptions in August, 2008 when he voluntarily surrendered his DEA registration number. It is alleged that subsequent to that date, he continued to write prescriptions for Oxycontin, a Schedule II controlled substance on numerous occasions in 2009. NATHAN was arrested yesterday and is scheduled to appear before U. S. Magistrate Judge Louis Moore, Jr., this afternoon. The indictment was sealed until the defendant’s arrest. Each count of the indictment carries a maximum penalty of four (4) years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000.00 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. U. S. Attorney Letten emphasized that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Louisiana State Police. The case is being prosecuted by Mark A. Miller, Chief, Organized Crime Strike Force Unit.
