DEA News: Paducah Convicted Felon Indicted On Crack-Cocaine Charges

MAY 16 -- (Paducah, KY) - A federal grand jury in Paducah returned an indictment on April 8, 2008 against Cornealius Grant Brown charges of crack-cocaine possession with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm, the DEA announced today.

The Indictment alleges that on or about January 25, 2008, that Brown knowingly and intentionally possessed with the intent to distribute five grams or more of a mixture or substance which contained cocaine base, commonly known as “crack” cocaine. The crack-cocaine recovered by law enforcement has a street value of approximately $4,300. The Indictment also alleges that on or about January 25, 2008, that Brown, a convicted felon, possessed a 9mm handgun. The Indictment seeks forfeiture of $2,295.00 in U.S. Currency, a nine millimeter Desert Eagle handgun bearing Serial Number 142439 and a box of Winchester nine millimeter luger ammunition.

Usually, in the event of a conviction, the minimum potential penalty would be five years imprisonment with a maximum potential penalty of forty years imprisonment, a $2,000,000 fine, and supervised release for a period of at least four years. However, because Brown has prior state court convictions for possession of a controlled substance and wanton endangerment, the minimum penalties can be doubled in federal court. Therefore, in the event of a conviction, Brown is facing a minimum penalty of ten years imprisonment, a $4,000,000 fine and supervised release for a period of at least eight years following incarceration.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michele Thielhorn, and it was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department.
