Operation “Kindred Spirits” Targets Local Trouble Spot

Today, San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne, DEA Special Agent in Charge John S. Fernandes and San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis announced that on February 17, 2005 members of the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) Mid-City Divisional Narcotic Team and the DEA San Diego County Integrated Narcotic Task Force (NTF), working in cooperation with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office (DA) and the Alcohol Beverage Control Department (ABC), brought a 4-month undercover investigation to a close.

The investigation targeted the activities in and around the Kindred Spirits Bar located at 3641 Madison Avenue in San Diego, California. The business has been the site of prolific drug trafficking and violence. SDPD patrol units have responded to over 150 calls to the area in the last 12 months. Citizens in the surrounding community voiced their concern to the authorities, who, in response, launched Operation Kindred Spirits.

For the last 4 months the SDPD Mid-City Divisional Narcotic Team worked with the NTF and ABC, with the full support of the DA’s office, to identify those responsible for the drug trafficking at the bar and conduct numerous undercover drug buys in and around the location.

On February 17, 2005 the operation culminated in the arrest of 9 suspects, the execution of a search warrant, the seizure of methamphetamine, ecstasy, marijuana, PCP and assets, and an inspection of the premises at Kindred Spirits by SDPD Vice. A violation of ABC regulations was noted.

SDPD Captain Kanaski stated, “ This operation is an excellent example of how we can effectively address the concerns of a neighborhood through cooperative law enforcement”.

DA Bonnie Dumanis affirmed,” Drug dealers in San Diego County need to grasp one simple truth: We will get you”.

DEA SAC Fernandes said,” Whenever and wherever we have the opportunity and ability to assist our local law enforcement partners to affect a positive impact within the community, we will respond”.
