DEA Visits Local Schools for Red Ribbon Week

NOV 3 -- This year marked the 20th anniversary of the murder of DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena at the hands of drug dealers. That tragic event inspired the national Red Ribbon Week in memoriam to Special Agent Camarena and all law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live drug free. This October, during Red Ribbon Week, Special Agents from the DEA San Diego Field Division gave 45 presentations in the area reaching out to over 12,500 students about the spirit of Red Ribbon Week and the dangers of drug abuse. Mika Camarena, the wife of Special Agent Kiki Camarena, was the featured speaker at many of these presentations. Her heartfelt message about the sacrifices made by the Special Agents of DEA and the importance of the promise to stay drug free touched thousands of students and made it an especially memorable Red Ribbon event in San Diego.

DEA also participated in a march with Myrna Camarena (sister of Special Agent Kiki Camarena), Dora (mother of Special Agent Kiki Camarena), and hundreds of students through the streets of Escondido, California culminating in a Red Ribbon Rally at Escondido City Hall.

The San Diego Field Division Demand Reduction Program also co-sponsored a luncheon and awards ceremony highlighting youth achievements in drug prevention, law enforcement contributions to demand reduction, and exemplary media coverage in the field of drug awareness.
