The Land Acquisition Section secured the site for the establishment of the Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge off the coast of Washington state. In 1982, Congress passed legislation designating the island as a national wildlife refuge, allocating $4 million for property acquisition. Protection Island is home to several species of seabirds including one of the largest nesting colonies of Rhinoceros auklets in the world.
