Detroit Immigration Judge Participates
in Naturalization Ceremony
DETROIT -- Immigration Judge Marsha K. Nettles from the Executive Office for Immigration Review, Detroit Immigration Court, delivered the keynote speech and administered the oath of allegiance to approximately 80 candidates during a naturalization ceremony at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in Detroit, Mich., on Feb. 24, 2012. The Detroit District Office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Department of Homeland Security, hosted the ceremony.
Biographical Information
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales appointed Judge Nettles in February 2005. Judge Nettles received a bachelor of arts degree in 1985 from Michigan State University and a juris doctorate in 1988 from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. From March 2003 to February 2005 she served as chief counsel for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Detroit. While in that role, Judge Nettles served as acting chief of the National Security Law Division for ICE, Office of the Principal Legal Advisor, in Washington, D.C., from February 2004 to May 2004. From April 1997 to March 2003, she was first the assistant district counsel, then the district counsel, for the former Immigration and Naturalization Service. Judge Nettles is a member of the State Bar of Michigan.

The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) is an agency within the Department of Justice. Under delegated authority from the Attorney General, immigration judges and the Board of Immigration Appeals interpret and adjudicate immigration cases according to United States immigration laws. EOIR's immigration judges conduct administrative court proceedings in immigration courts located throughout the nation. They determine whether foreign-born individuals—whom the Department of Homeland Security charges with violating immigration law—should be ordered removed from the United States or should be granted relief from removal and be permitted to remain in this country. The Board of Immigration Appeals primarily reviews appeals of decisions by immigration judges. EOIR's Office of the Chief Administrative Hearing Officer adjudicates immigration-related employment cases. EOIR is committed to ensuring fairness in all of the cases it adjudicates.
