CHIEF IMMIGRATION JUDGE SWEARS-IN NEW IMMIGRATION
JUDGE IN FLORENCE, ARIZONA
FLORENCE, AZ -- Chief Immigration Judge, Michael J. Creppy today gave the oath of office to
Judge Scott Jefferies at an investiture ceremony in the County Courthouse in Florence, Arizona.
Judge Jefferies joins the ranks of 178 United States Immigration Court Judges located in 34
Immigration Courts throughout the nation. U.S. Immigration Judges are responsible for
conducting formal administrative proceedings, and act independently in their decision-making
capacity. In FY 95, over 200,000 matters were handled, which included exclusion, deportation,
bond and rescission cases.
Judge Jefferies received both his undergraduate and Juris Doctorate degrees from Brigham
Young University and is a member of the Oregon and Idaho Bar. From August 1988 until July
1995, Judge Jefferies served as Sector Counsel for the Immigration and Naturalization Service
(INS) in the Yuma, Arizona sector. Prior to his job with INS, Judge Jefferies worked as a
Military Attorney with the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Office at Fort Lewis,
Washington and at Yuma Proving Ground in Yuma, Arizona. He also worked in private practice
for several years in Nyssa, Oregon with the firm of Stunz, Fonda and Pratt.
Judge Jefferies joins the Office of the Chief Immigration Judge (OCIJ) at the Florence, Arizona
Immigration Court. He will serve with Immigration Judge LaMonte S. Freerks.
