About the Court

The Immigration Judges are responsible for conducting formal court proceedings, and act independently in their decision-making capacity; their decisions are administratively final, unless appealed or certified to the Board of the Immigration Appeals. The population status of the caseload is both detained and non-detained.
In addition to determining whether individuals
are admissible (i.e., should be permitted to enter the United States) or
deportable (i.e., should be removed from the United States), the Immigration
Judges have jurisdiction to consider applications for various forms of relief
from removal. These include applications for such relief as asylum, adjustment
of status, cancellation of removal and waivers of inadmissibility.
