Justice
Management Division
Serving Justice - Securing Results
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is entrusted with enforcing the law, providing federal leadership in preventing crime, and ensuring public safety against threats. In line with this mission, DOJ is committed to serving as an example in the area of environmental stewardship and compliance with environmental legislation and Executive Orders.
The Environmental Policy and Program Management staff is a part of the Justice Management Division, Facilities and Administrative Services Staff (FASS). The duties of this program are to provide guidance for Department compliance on legislation, executive orders, and other regulations. The staff also provides leadership and support to DOJ components, develops and implements DOJ environmental policies, and represents DOJ on interagency workgroups among other tasks.
In 1999, the DOJ Environmental Working Group (EWG) was established to facilitate communication and consistency of policies within the Department. EWG consists of environmental representatives from each of the five main bureaus (FBI, USMS, ATF, DEA and BOP) and is chaired by one member from FASS. The current focus of the EWG is complying with Executive Order 13423, "Strengthening the Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management," signed, January 26, 2007 and the new Executive Order 13514, “Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance”, signed October 8, 2009. This group has helped the DOJ components create and implement Environmental Management Systems, report progress on Executive Orders and Federal policies, and disseminate pertinent policy information among other accomplishments.
DOJ's Environmental Stewardship Council was established
in 2007 to set forth DOJ's policies and procedures for effectively
managing environmental programs while complementing the efforts
and systems that support the agency's mission. The primary functional
areas of responsibility that encompass environmental aspects include
budget, facilities, purchasing, information technology, environmental
management, security, and overall administration. The Council is
chaired by the Agency Environmental Executive, Mr. Lee Lofthus.
