| Definition |
Night pay is premium pay for work performed between certain hours of the day. Different rules apply for General Schedule (GS) and prevailing rate (wage) employees.

| Amount |
GS: 10 percent of the employee's rate of basic pay (including locality pay and special pay adjustments for law enforcement officers) for work performed between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Wage: 7 1/2 percent of the employee's scheduled rate for work performed between 3 p.m. and midnight, and 10 percent of the employee's scheduled rate for work performed between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Type of Work Covered |
GS: Regularly scheduled work--i.e., work scheduled in advance of the administrative workweek--including overtime, Sunday, and holiday work.
Wage: Regularly scheduled non-overtime work when a majority of the hours fall within the night period.

GS: Not part of basic pay.
Wage: Part of basic pay.

Employee On Leave
|
GS: Night pay is payable for a period of paid leave only when total leave for a pay period is less than 8 hours.
Wage: Night pay is payable for all periods of leave on a night shift.
