Sample Computation: Supervisory Differential

This computation uses 2003 pay rates to demonstrate the calculation of the maximum payable supervisory differential under the statute (5 U.S.C. 5755),  regulations (5 CFR Part 575, Subpart D), and Department policy.

The highest paid non-GS (General Schedule) subordinate's continuing pay is $25.97 per hour or $2,077.60 biweekly.  The GS supervisor's continuing pay, including locality pay, is $26.31 per hour or $2,104.80 biweekly (GS-11, step 5 in the Washington, DC area).

Step One Adjust the non-GS subordinate's biweekly continuing pay by 1.03:

$2,077.60  X  1.03  =  $2,139.93

Step Two Subtract the GS supervisor's biweekly continuing pay from the non-GS subordinate's biweekly adjusted continuing pay.

$2,139.93 - 2,104.80 = $35.13

Step Three $35.13 is the maximum supervisory differential that may be paid on a biweekly basis. The approving official may also determine to pay a lesser amount.
