Department of Justice Spectrum Management Office

Justice Management Division
Serving Justice - Securing Results

The mission of DOJ Spectrum Management Office is to lead the Department in the management and protection of Radio Frequency (RF) spectrum-dependent resources by:

  • Representing DOJ in national and international forums.
  • Developing and executing policy, plans, procedures, and technical criteria to provide advice, assistance, and guidance to the DOJ Secretarial Officers, Headquarters Program Offices, and field sites on the use of spectrum dependent systems and services.
  • Administering the effective planning, certification, assignment, and efficient use of radio frequency authorizations that support DOJ spectrum dependent systems, facilities, and operations.
  • Re-engineering business processes for improved efficiency and effectiveness in the overall management of spectrum resources through the application of information technology.

United States spectrum management policies are administered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for Federal Government users, and by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for all other users.

1710 - 1755 MHz Relocation Effort

On December 27, 2005, the U.S. Department of Commerce provided estimated costs and timeline information associated with relocating federal operations from the 1710-1755 MHZ band. The total number of frequency assignments that will be relocated by 12 federal agencies is 2,240 and the cost for the relocation of Federal Government operations is estimated to be $935,940,312. This effort is part of the 90 MHZ of radio spectrum that is to be made available for the near term for advanced wireless (including third generation or "3G") telecommunications services to meet the demand for new wireless services. To complete the 90 MHZ of spectrum being made available for advanced wireless services, the additional 45 MHZ of spectrum will be provided by the FCC (2110-2155 MHZ band).
