MEMORANDUM FOR EXECUTIVE OFFICERS
                                BUREAU PERSONNEL OFFICERS

FROM:            Joanne W. Simms
                         Director, Personnel Staff

SUBJECT:      Attorney General's Authorization to Use Appropriated Funds to Reimburse Tuition Costs

On October 19, 2001, the Deputy Attorney General authorized the use of appropriated funds for tuition reimbursement in Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan and the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) for components which have school-aged dependents in those locations. The tuition reimbursement costs for Puerto Rico and Guam will be for attendance in Department of Defense (DoD) schools. The tuition reimbursement costs for Saipan shall not exceed the amount that the Department of Justice pays to the DoD for educational expenses for DoD schooling in Guam. The tuition reimbursement costs for the USVI shall not exceed the amount that DOJ pays to the DoD for educational expenses for DoD schooling in Puerto Rico.

The attached approval memorandum explains the rationale for the request. It will be posted on the Personnel Staff's Web site under "Recent Memos." To access it, go to www.usdoj.gov/jmd/ps.
