Geographic Areas of Assignment

Experienced Attorneys: Experienced attorneys are generally hired to fill specific vacancies or newly-created positions within the Department of Justice. Attorney vacancies, which are posted online, specify the location of the position being filled. Certain hiring components offer employment opportunities only in Washington, D.C. Other components, such as the Antitrust Division, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Trustee Program, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, the Environment and Natural Resources Division, Tax Division, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, have field offices located in cities nationwide. The 94 U.S. Attorneys' Offices are organized into districts and located in every state and territory. Entry-level (Honors Program) Attorneys: The majority of Honors Program attorney positions are in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. The Antitrust Division, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, the U.S. Trustee Program and participating U.S. Attorney's Offices may hire entry-level attorneys for positions outside the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. All other components hire Honors Program attorneys for Washington, D.C., only.

Antitrust Division: The Antitrust Division hires Honors Program attorneys for its three regional field offices (located in Chicago, San Francisco, and New York City), and Washington, D.C. Applicants may indicate their geographic preferences on the application.

Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR): EOIR hires Honors Program attorneys for the Office of the Chief Administrative Hearing Officer and the Board of Immigration Appeals, both located in Falls Church, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.) and for positions in the Immigration Courts located nationwide. Applicants to EOIR may be asked to state geographic preferences at the time of interview.

Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP): BOP hires Honors Program attorneys for the Central Office in Washington, D.C., regional offices, consolidated legal centers located nationwide, or one of 116 correctional institutions.

U.S. Trustee Program: The U.S. Trustee Offices hire Honors Program attorneys for positions in 95 regional/field offices located throughout the country, and occasionally for the Executive Office for U.S. Trustees in Washington, D.C., but cannot identify specific vacancies. Candidates should discuss specific geographic assignment at the time of interview.

U.S. Attorneys' Offices (USAOs): Only a limited number of USAOs formally participate in the Honors Program each year. Participating offices and the number of anticipated hires are listed on the formal application available online and in the published "Participating Components" posted on the Honors Program web page. USAOs hire for offices in their geographic district.
