George W. Venables was appointed by
President George W. Bush and confirmed by the United States Senate on
October 10th, 2008 as the United States Marshal for the Southern
District of California. Marshal Venables is responsible for the management, administration, and direction of operations throughout the district. His overall responsibilities include protecting the United States Courts, criminal investigations, executions of federal court orders, and other law enforcement activities. Marshal Venables is also responsible to act as the chief policy maker, decision maker, final disciplinary official, and for implementation and development of new programs both administratively and operationally. In 1975, Marshal Venables started his career in law enforcement in Flagstaff Arizona as a Police Officer. After serving five years with the Flagstaff Police Department, Marshal Venables signed on with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a Special Agent. Marshal Venables was a Special Agent from December 1980-January 1993. During this time Marshal Venables conducted and managed complex criminal investigations targeting drug trafficking organizations, seized assets, and conducted undercover operations. Marshal Venables developed the curriculum for seminars and trained hundreds of foreign law enforcement officers’ worldwide in investigative techniques and procedures. Marshal Venables served in multiple offices as a Special Agent, including: Phoenix, Arizona, Los Angeles, California, Guadalajara, Mexico, Yuma, Arizona and the DEA/FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. |

In January 1993, Marshal Venables was promoted to Supervisory Special
Agent in Mobile Alabama. In 1995 he transferred to the DEA San Diego
Field Division. During his time as a supervisor, Marshal Venables
supervised state and local task forces, DEA enforcement groups and the
technical operations/security programs group. While supervising the DEA/FBI
Task Force Marshal Venables was the liaison point of contact to Mexico
for the San Diego office. As the technical operations/security programs
supervisor, Marshal Venables was responsible for initiating and
maintaining the Disaster Recovery Program, ensuring the physical
security for five DEA buildings and 400 employees in San Diego and
Imperial counties, and providing technical assistance to agents in their
investigations. After serving 27 years with the DEA, Marshal Venables retired in 2007 to become the Assistant Security Manager for the San Diego Convention Center. Marshal Venables holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Police Science and Administration and Master of Science Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University. Marshal Venables serves on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Industrial Security and San Diego County Crime Stoppers. He is the chairman of the Circle of Friends Committee of the Vista Hill Foundation and a member of the Autism Society of America. He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Marshal Venables is also a member of the Association of Former Federal Narcotics Agents and Federal Law Enforcement Officers’ Association. Marshal Venables and his wife Mary have two children. |
