Richard V. Mecum was appointed by President George W. Bush as the United States Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia, following U.S. Senate confirmation, on August 12, 2002.

Richard received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia in 1977, and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Brenau College in 1986.

Richard began his law enforcement career in 1963 as a city police officer with the Fort Collins, Colorado Police Department.  Following his move to Georgia, and attending the University of Georgia, Richard became a police officer with the University of Georgia Police Department in 1974.  There he was promoted through the ranks to Major and became the Director of the Northeast Georgia Police Academy.  In 1978, Richard became the Supervisor/ Instructor for Management Studies, and State and Local Law Enforcement Studies and the Georgia Police Academy in Atlanta, Georgia. 

In 1980, Richard was elected to the office of Sheriff in Hall County, Georgia.  He made history by becoming the first Republican ever to be elected to office in Hall County.  Richard Served successfully as Sheriff for three terms (12Years) before retiring.  Richard started a private security company, which grew in size until it was sold to a national security company in 1998.  Richard remained on as a security consultant until being appointed as the U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia.
