United States Marshal Michael G. McGinn

Michael G. McGinn was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the United States Senate on May 22, 2008 as the United States Marshal for the State of Minnesota.

Marshal McGinn is responsible for the management, administration, and direction of operations throughout the district. His overall responsibilities include protecting the United States Courts, criminal investigations, executions of federal court orders, and other law enforcement activities. Marshal McGinn is also responsible to act as the chief policy maker, decision maker, disciplinary official, and for implementation and development of new programs both administratively and operationally.

In 1968, Marshal McGinn started his career in law enforcement in Saint Paul, Minnesota as a Police Officer. He served 31 years with the Saint Paul Police, most of which was in a command or supervisory capacity.  He was instrumental in bringing community based policing to the agency.  He also served as the commander of the Training & Personnel Section for the department and President of the Association of Training Officers of Minnesota (ATOM). 

 

Marshal McGinn was elected to the Minnesota State Senate in 2002 and served four years on the Crime Prevention Committee, Public Safety Finance Committee, Transportation Committee, and the Tax Committee. He also served as a Senate representative to the Council on Black Minnesotans.  In 2007 he was appointed by Governor Pawlenty to serve on the Minnesota Board of Public Defense.

Marshal McGinn holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of St. Thomas and completed the Police Administration and Training Program at Northwestern University.

Marshal McGinn and his wife Lisa have four children, two of whom are currently serving on the St. Paul Police Department, and four grandchildren.
