History of Western District of North Dakota
The Territory of
Dakota was created on March 2, 1861 and included the area of present day
North and South Dakota. William F. Shaffer was the original appointment as
U.S. Marshal for the Territory of Dakota. Dakota remained a territory
until November 2 1889 when North Dakota was admitted as a State with one
federal Judicial District. Albert F. Price received the original
appointment as U.S. Marshal for the District of North Dakota on February
27, 1890.
