United States Marshal Johnny Mack Brown was appointed by President
George W. Bush on November 15, 2002. Marshal Brown, a native South
Carolinian, began his distinguished law enforcement career in 1966 as a
South Carolina Probation/Parole Officer. Marshal Brown’s experience with
the South Carolina Probation, Parole and Pardon Board propelled him into
the South Carolina Solicitor’s Office for the Thirteenth Judicial
Circuit in 1968. In that office, he served as both an Investigator and
the Director of the Greenville County Pre-Trial Diversion Program. In 1976, Marshal Brown was elected Sheriff of Greenville County, SC. As Sheriff, Marshal Brown’s goal was to establish professional, accountable law enforcement services for Greenville County. To accomplish this goal, Marshal Brown became involved in a number of law enforcement organizations and educational opportunities. In 1983, Marshal Brown was selected as President of the South Carolina Sheriff’s Association and its “Sheriff of the Year.” Marshal Brown also became a member of the National Sheriff’s Association and was selected to its Board of Directors in 1983. |

In 1993, he was inducted as President of the
National Sheriff’s Association. In 1985, Marshal Brown traveled to
Scotland with the University Of South Carolina’s College of Criminal
Justice to study the Scottish police system. In 1988, Marshal Brown led
the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office to become the first nationally
accredited law enforcement agency in South Carolina by the Commission on
Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The following year, he was
appointed to a three-year term on the Commission’s twenty-one member
accreditation panel.
On January 3, 2001, after twenty-four consecutive years, Johnny Mack Brown retired as Sheriff of Greenville County. However, his law enforcement career was far from over. On November 15, 2002, President George W. Bush appointed him as United States Marshal for the District of South Carolina. Marshal Brown continues to strive for positive change, but his final objective is always the same - the best in accountable and professional law enforcement for every member of the community. |
