Eastern District of Louisiana

* On October 15, 2009, President Barack Obama visited the Martin Luther King Charter School, located in New Orleans’s “Lower Ninth Ward.” The school and area have received much acclaim, as both were severely impacted and are still recovering in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

 

Eastern Louisiana Deputy Frances “Sha” Niolon, who serves as the district’s G.R.E.A.T. coordinator was invited to attend the President’s visit.  Since 2006, Deputy Niolon and Deputy Maurice Lightfoot have instructed more than 12 G.R.E.A.T. classes and graduated more than 300 students from the USMS G.R.E.A.T. program.

 

During the visit, President Obama delivered a heartfelt address to the students, encouraging them to continue on their educational paths, that they too could become President of the United States. 

 

* In July 2009 the Eastern District of Louisiana’s G.R.E.A.T. program teamed up with Trinity Christian Community Center to sponsor a week long camp for kids from the Hollygrove neighborhood in New Orleans. Read more here:

District of Massachusetts

* A graduation for 198 students took place on April 7, 2009 at Central High School in Springfield, MA (http://www.cbs3springfield.com/news/local/42643912.html). You can read more here and see photos here!

Western District of Missouri

* On July 23, 2009 DUSM Gallow participated in a Youth Seminar.  The evening involved discussions with the youth and their parents about making good decisions when away from home, not succumbing to peer pressure,  tips on how to avoid using drugs, and not allowing, or being a part of, “bullying”.

 

* August 4, 2009 DUSM Gallow participated with the Blue Springs Police Department and various other Law Enforcement agencies in “Cops Night Out”.  This event involved DUSM Gallow talking and interacting with local children and their parents about the U.S. Marshals Service and the G.R.E.A.T. Program. 

 

District of New Jersey

* The last of the elementary school version of the G.R.E.A.T. program in Jersey City have graduated, and the focus is on the Middle school G.R.E.A.T. classes full time.  The district is now in the process of scheduling a graduation in May or early June.

 

* Currently the 6th graders at both MS-4 and PS-38 are working on their G.R.E.A.T. essay project. The topic of the essay is “How have the lessons you learned in the G.R.E.A.T. program helped you in school and in your community?”  Each class will have two winners.

 

Western District of New York

* DUSM Smith coordinated with the Buffalo Bills and arranged the G.R.E.A.T. student to visit the Bills Training camp. The Bills extended an invitation to the U.S. Marshals/G.R.E.A.T. program to attend the Bills practice on July 26 with VIP status.  This was the first time many of the children have ever been to see the Bills. While at the camp, the children participated in the Bills experience. This is an interactive NFL area where children and adults can find out what it’s like to be an NFL player. Some of the activities include the quarterback challenge, field goal challenge, obstacle courses, the gauntlet, and more.  G.R.E.A.T. students meet and received autographs from Trent Edwards, Josh Reed, Corey McIntyre, and Paul Posluszny. Josh Reed gave 3 children his receiving gloves and the NFL logo off of his practice jersey.

 

* In August, G.R.E.A.T. and the USMS traveled to Hawkeye Bowman Sportsman’s Club. They spent the day outside learning about safety and survival, and even about the sport of archery from the experts. A picnic style lunch was provided for everyone. This event was covered by the Buffalo News. Please click on link to read the article. http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/other/story/764970.html

 

Northern District of Ohio

* In May, students and chaperones from Hope Academy Cathedral and Miles Park School attended a field trip to the Carl L. Stokes Federal Courthouse. The G.R.E.A.T. students had the opportunity to learn about the federal system and tour the jury department, the USMS floor and the courtrooms. They also had the opportunity to listen to the Honorable Solomon Oliver, Jr., USM Pete Elliott, ACHIEF Andrew Deserto, and Representatives from the US Attorney’s Office, Pre-Trial and Probation share their roles and responsibilities in the federal system and inform the kids of the consequences of getting involved in criminal activities.

 

* Two G.R.E.A.T. graduations took place in May. The first one was held on May 8th for 55 students from Hope Academy Cathedral and the other on May 12th for 155 students from Miles Park. The guest speakers were USM Pete Elliott, ACHIEF Andrew Deserto, Commander Deon McCaulley - Cleveland Police Department, Sgt. Tim Higgins - Cleveland Police Department, and the Keynote Speaker, Skip Brown - Representative from Congresswoman Marcia Fudge's office.

 

Eastern District of Wisconsin

* The 6th grade class at Fritsche Middle School held their graduation ceremony on June 9th.  The graduation was attended by U.S. Marshal Thomas Conlon, Chief Deputy Doug Bachert, Principal Karen Nastulski, as well as many parents. In addition to the G.R.E.A.T. certificates, there were several students who received USMS Certificates for demonstrating G.R.E.A.T. ideals in the school setting. After the ceremony, all attendees were treated to graduation cake.

 

* The 7th grade students recently completed their G.R.E.A.T. camping trip.  35 students attended the 3 day camping trip which included hiking, rock wall climbing, Alpine tower climbing as well as other camp activities. At the end of each day, students and staff held an evening gathering campfire.
