Savannah, Ga. -- A fugitive wanted by the U.S.
Marshals in the Southern District of Georgia and the Savannah Chatham
Metropolitan Police Department was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Savannah
Office of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and SCMPD Patrol units
on May 10 in Savannah, Georgia. Robert A. Pickett aka “Hurricane”, 29, was being sought on both federal and state warrants. Pickett had been convicted in U.S. District Court in 2008 for Supervised Release Violation and Possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and sentenced to 112 months in prison. He was also convicted on states charges in Bryan County and sentenced to state prison. The Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force has worked extensively to locate this fugitive over the last 90 days. On May 4, the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department obtained warrants for him on charges of Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a pistol without a license, possession of a firearm during a crime, and cruelty towards a child. On May 10, the Marshals Southeast Regional Task Force generated an address at an apartment building in Savannah as a possible address for Pickett. Surveillance was conducted on the address and Pickett was observed sitting on the porch. With the assistance of SCMPD Patrol units, the apartment building was surrounded and Pickett was arrested without incident. Pickett was transported to the Chatham County Jail. Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshals result in the apprehension of approximately 36, 000 federal fugitives. More federal fugitives are arrested by the Marshals Service than all other federal agencies combined. The Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force has three offices: Atlanta, Macon, and Savannah. The task force covers the whole state of Georgia. The Savannah Offices of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force is a team comprised of investigators from the Georgia Department of Corrections, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department, the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Marshals Service. The task force objective is to seek out and arrest fugitives charged with violent crimes, drug crimes, sex offenders, and other felonies. Last year, U.S. Marshals Task Forces arrested more than 58,600 state and local fugitives on felony charges.
