Task Force Captures Deondray Crayton, Former Fugitive of the Week and Current Murder Suspect |
 Cleveland, Ohio
– On Wednesday evening, June 17, 2009, at approximately 5:00
PM wanted fugitive Deondray Crayton was apprehended by members of the U.S.
Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. Crayton was wanted for
failing to appear for his arraignment on a federal weapons charge. Crayton
was featured on Channel 3 News, and in Cleveland’s Plain Dealer as the
Fugitive of the Week during the week of May 18, 2009. During the course of
the investigation, Task Force members gained information that Crayton was
possibly staying at a residence located on the 1000 block of Addison Avenue
on Cleveland’s east side. Deputy Marshals along with Task Force Officers
established surveillance on the residence and were about to converge when
four males exited the residence and got into a vehicle, one of which was
identified as Crayton. As the vehicle began to move the Task Force closed in
to make a traffic stop. Crayton immediately fled the vehicle and began a
foot chase that lasted eight blocks through east side neighborhoods. Crayton
was finally run down behind a residence and taken into custody without
incident on the 1100 block of E. 74th street. During the course of the foot
chase Crayton entered a home on E71st Street in an attempt to hide from the
police but was chased out of the home by its owner. For this act Crayton has
picked up additional charges for burglary. The other three males in the
vehicle were questioned and two were released by Cleveland Police.As these events unfolded it had been learned that Crayton was named as a suspect in a shooting that occurred during the early hours on Tuesday morning June 16, 2009.at W. 30th Street and Clark Avenue. Crayton was taken to the Cleveland Police Homicide Division for questioning following his arrest. By the end of the evening, the weapon believed to be used in the shooting was recovered by Cleveland Police with the assistance of the Task Force. Cleveland Police expect to charge Crayton with the murder of Paulino Rivera today. United States Marshal Peter Elliott stated that “I am extremely proud of our Task Force for putting forth the diligence to apprehend Crayton. What seemed like an ordinary day’s work blossomed into a situation that brought closure to one of society’s most heinous crimes. Our partnership with the Cleveland Division of Police and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office is proving to be an invaluable relationship.
